{"id":153767,"date":"2024-11-12T11:53:38","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T11:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta-ukri.msappproxy.net\/?page_id=153767"},"modified":"2025-03-28T10:06:31","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T10:06:31","slug":"find-out-if-you-can-apply-for-funding","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/apply-for-funding\/before-you-apply\/find-out-if-you-can-apply-for-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Find out if you can apply for funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before you apply, follow these steps to find out if UKRI can fund your project.<\/p>\n<h2>Check if your organisation is eligible<\/h2>\n<p>To apply for funding, you need to be based at an organisation we have already approved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/publications\/organisation-eligibility\">Check if your organisation is eligible<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If your organisation is not currently eligible, they can <a href=\"\/apply-for-funding\/before-you-apply\/apply-to-be-an-eligible-organisation\">apply to be approved<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have confirmed your organisation is eligible, you can <a href=\"\/opportunity\">search for funding opportunities<\/a>. Each opportunity will have details of the eligibility criteria you must meet in order to apply.<\/p>\n<h3>Eligibility for businesses<\/h3>\n<p>If you are a business, check the specific criteria in the funding opportunity. We run eligibility checks for each application. Most funding opportunities for businesses are offered through <a href=\"\/councils\/innovate-uk\/funding-assessment-and-award-management\/\">Innovate UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You must be a UK-registered business to apply for funding as a project lead. Check the funding opportunity for details about who you can collaborate with.<\/p>\n<p>To be eligible as a UK-registered business you must have a Companies House registration number.<\/p>\n<p>You are not eligible to apply as a project lead if your business:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>has an FC or BR prefix on your registration number<\/li>\n<li>is registered in the Channel Islands or Isle of Man<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Check if you can lead a project<\/h2>\n<p>In most cases, your application will need a project lead.<\/p>\n<p>A project lead is responsible for managing the project. They are the main contact for UKRI.<\/p>\n<p>To be a project lead, you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>have a contract with an eligible organisation<\/li>\n<li>be able to meet the specific criteria for the funding opportunity you are interested in<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fellowships fund an individual and do not have a project co-lead. The fellow acts as the lead.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not sure if you can be a project lead, check the details of the funding opportunity you\u2019re interested in.<\/p>\n<h3>Project co-leads<\/h3>\n<p>A project co-lead can take over the leadership of the project if required. Your team can have multiple project co-leads.<\/p>\n<p>A project co-lead must meet the same criteria as the project lead.<\/p>\n<h4>International project co-lead<\/h4>\n<p>Each funding opportunity will specify if international project co-leads are allowed. Read more about <a href=\"\/publications\/ukri-project-co-lead-international\/ukri-project-co-lead-international-policy\/\">being an international co-lead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Make sure your idea is right for UKRI<\/h2>\n<p>You can apply for funding if you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>already have a project idea<\/li>\n<li>have seen a specific opportunity that you want to shape your idea around<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will need to make sure your idea complies with the <a href=\"\/publications\/ukri-trusted-research-and-innovation-guidance\/\">trusted research and innovation principles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some opportunities specify what ideas we are looking to fund. You will need to build your team and research proposal around the funding criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Other opportunities are applicant-led and have a wider scope. These opportunities will allow you to define your own research, as long as it\u2019s within the council remit.<\/p>\n<h3>Check the remit for what we fund<\/h3>\n<p>Each council&#8217;s remit page has more detail on the topic areas they cover:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/councils\/ahrc\/remit-programmes-and-priorities\/\">history, archaeology, philosophy and languages<\/a> are funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/councils\/bbsrc\/remit-programmes-and-priorities\/\">plants, animals (including humans) and microbes<\/a> are funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/councils\/esrc\/remit-portfolio-and-priorities\/\">social sciences, for example economics, psychology and education<\/a> are funded by the Economic and Social Research Council<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/councils\/epsrc\/remit-programmes-and-priorities\/\">chemistry, engineering, information and communications technologies, mathematical sciences, physics and materials<\/a> are funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/councils\/innovate-uk\/strategy-remit-and-programmes\/\">development and commercialisation of new products, processes and services for businesses<\/a> are funded by Innovate UK<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/councils\/mrc\/strategy-remit-and-programmes\/\">global health research, infections and immunity, neurosciences and mental health<\/a> are funded by the Medical Research Council<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/councils\/nerc\/remit-programmes-and-priorities\/\">atmospheric physics and chemistry, geosciences, ecology, biodiversity and climate<\/a> are funded by the Natural Environment Research Council<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/councils\/stfc\/remit-portfolio-and-priorities\/\">astronomy, particle and nuclear physics, accelerator science and computational science<\/a> are funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your proposal is multidisciplinary, contact the council you think is most likely to fund your research.
