{"id":24747,"date":"2021-06-10T10:28:57","date_gmt":"2021-06-10T09:28:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta-ukri.msappproxy.net\/?page_id=24747"},"modified":"2025-05-14T15:53:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T14:53:49","slug":"hannah-ladd-jones","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/news-and-events\/101-jobs-that-change-the-world\/hannah-ladd-jones\/","title":{"rendered":"Hannah Ladd-Jones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hannah Ladd-Jones is Engagement Officer at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masts.ac.uk\">Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS)<\/a>, based at the Scottish Oceans Institute in University of St Andrews.<\/p>\n<p>Communication is at the heart of her dynamic and varied role.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I try to make Scottish marine science more accessible to other researchers, to marine stakeholders, and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>It has never been more important for society to be aware of the issues facing our oceans, and to do this we need to start a dialogue between academics at different institutions, policy makers, industry, conservation charities, and members of the public.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hannah organises a large number of multi-stakeholder online events and webinars for the marine science community.<\/p>\n<p>She also established \u2018MASTS Casts\u2019, a series of weekly short films that showcased the breadth of marine-science research, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a PhD student having their first paper published<\/li>\n<li>a collective of academics discussing a successfully funded project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hannah not only provides information and practical assistance to speakers at these events, but also advises on how to engage their audience.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Researchers often have a misconception that when they\u2019re talking to a less academic audience they have to \u2018dumb down\u2019 the science.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it\u2019s about making the research accessible and communicating in a way that\u2019s relatable.<\/p>\n<p>Not all academics have that skill, which is why roles like mine are so important.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hannah studied biology as an undergraduate and conservation for her Master\u2019s and although she loved being part of an academic community, she knew she didn\u2019t want to do a PhD or take on an administration role.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I wasn\u2019t aware of jobs like mine when I was studying, but it is perfect for me.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to be a researcher but I love learning and talking about new research.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not enough to publish in academic journals; for real change to happen it\u2019s vital we open up the discourse so we can learn from each other.<\/p>\n<p>It can only improve the science.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hannah Ladd-Jones is Engagement Officer at the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS), based at the Scottish Oceans Institute in University of St Andrews.
