{"id":26828,"date":"2021-07-08T10:27:28","date_gmt":"2021-07-08T09:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta-ukri.msappproxy.net\/?post_type=council&#038;p=26828"},"modified":"2025-07-21T11:31:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T10:31:13","slug":"animal-use-in-research","status":"publish","type":"council","link":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/councils\/bbsrc\/guidance-for-applicants\/animal-use-in-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Funding for research involving animals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This page provides information and resources about the involvement of animals in research.<\/p>\n<p>Legislation and guidance changes and it is your responsibility to make sure you comply with the law.<\/p>\n<p>The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) supports the continued involvement of animals in scientific research, but only when the following strict conditions are met:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>researchers must provide sound scientific justification in funding applications for the involvement of animals<\/li>\n<li>researchers must have given due consideration to the replacement, refinement or reduction of the animals involved in the experiment<\/li>\n<li>it must not be scientifically acceptable to use non-animal alternatives in the research<\/li>\n<li>the research must be carried out in full compliance with current legislation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read the <a href=\"\/publications\/ukri-policy-on-research-and-innovation-involving-animals\/\">UKRI policy on research and innovation involving animals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Check your research meets animal welfare standards<\/h2>\n<p>Researchers and institutions that receive BBSRC funding for research using animals must comply with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/research-and-testing-using-animals\">Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 on GOV.UK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When applying, you must <a href=\"https:\/\/nc3rs.org.uk\/3rs-resources\/responsibility-use-animals-bioscience-research\">demonstrate consideration of the \u20183Rs\u2019 in your experimental design<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>replacement<\/li>\n<li>refinement<\/li>\n<li>reduction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Replacement<\/h3>\n<p>These are methods that avoid or replace the use of animals in an area where they would otherwise have been used.<\/p>\n<h3>Refinement<\/h3>\n<p>This includes improvements to scientific procedures and husbandry which minimise actual or potential:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pain<\/li>\n<li>suffering<\/li>\n<li>distress<\/li>\n<li>lasting harm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This also includes improvements to animal welfare in situations where the use of animals is unavoidable.<\/p>\n<h3>Reduction<\/h3>\n<p>These are methods which minimise current and future animal use by enabling researchers to get either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>comparable levels of information from fewer animals<\/li>\n<li>more information from the same number of animals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to include animal involvement in your application<\/h2>\n<p>If your application includes animal involvement, you must download and <a href=\"https:\/\/ukri-tfs-prod-assets.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/AnimalResearchQuestionTemplate-BBSRC.docx\">complete the &#8216;Research involving the use of animals&#8217; template<\/a>\u202f.<\/p>\n<p>This attachment must be submitted within the \u2018Research involving the use of animals&#8217; section of the application.<\/p>\n<p>You must include additional information that will need to be <a href=\"https:\/\/nc3rs.org.uk\/3rs-resource-library\/peer-review-and-advice-service\">reviewed by the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs<\/a>) if your research involves any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>non-human primates<\/li>\n<li>cats<\/li>\n<li>dogs<\/li>\n<li>equines<\/li>\n<li>pigs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Overseas research involving animals<\/h3>\n<p>If you are proposing to conduct overseas research involving animals, it must be conducted in accordance with <a href=\"\/publications\/ukri-policy-on-research-and-innovation-involving-animals\/\">UKRI policy on involving animals in research<\/a>. It is the responsibility of the project lead to ensure all named applicants in the UK and overseas are aware of this requirement.<\/p>\n<p>You must provide a statement in the &#8216;Conducting research with animals overseas&#8217; section of the application form to confirm that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>all named applicants are aware of the requirements and have agreed to abide by them<\/li>\n<li>this overseas research will be conducted in accordance with welfare standards consistent with the principles of UK legislation<\/li>\n<li>the <a href=\"https:\/\/nc3rs.org.uk\/3rs-resources\/responsibility-use-animals-bioscience-research\">NC3R guidance on &#8216;Responsibility in the use of animals in bioscience research&#8217;<\/a> will be followed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Research involving certain species<\/h4>\n<p>You will need to additional questions if your research involves any of the following species:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>rodents<\/li>\n<li>rabbits<\/li>\n<li>sheep<\/li>\n<li>goats<\/li>\n<li>pigs<\/li>\n<li>cattle<\/li>\n<li>Xenopus laevis or Xenopus tropicalis<\/li>\n<li>zebra fish<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Download and <a href=\"https:\/\/nc3rs.org.uk\/3rs-resources\/checklists-use-animals-overseas\">complete the relevant use of animals overseas checklist at NC3RS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your application will also need to be assessed by NC3Rs if your research involves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>non-human primates<\/li>\n<li>cats<\/li>\n<li>dogs<\/li>\n<li>equines<\/li>\n<li>pigs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/ukri-tfs-prod-assets.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/AnimalResearchQuestionTemplate-BBSRC.docx\">complete the \u2018Research involving the use of animals\u2019 template<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to include animal costs in your application<\/h2>\n<p>A detailed justification of any animal costs incurred should be given in the \u2018Resources and cost justification\u2019 section.<\/p>\n<p>You should also give details of any breeding programmes, if appropriate, to support the number of animals required.<\/p>\n<p>You can include the costs of both the animals themselves and their maintenance. These costs may be shown as either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>directly incurred<\/li>\n<li>directly allocated<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Applications must include a breakdown of animal costs, including weekly maintenance charges.<\/p>\n<p>You won\u2019t be penalised for including costs to guarantee animal welfare, or if your application exceeds the required animal welfare standards.<\/p>\n<h3>Animal suppliers<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re considering the use of animals from commercial suppliers, you should make sure they\u2019re UK-based wherever possible to minimise the risk of suffering during transport.<\/p>\n<p>You must use Home Office-approved suppliers if your research involves any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cats<\/li>\n<li>dogs<\/li>\n<li>primates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your research involves rhesus macaques, we ask you to source these from the <a href=\"https:\/\/cfm.har.mrc.ac.uk\/\">Medical Research Council Centre for Macaques (CFM) at Porton Down<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Experimental Design and Statistical Framework<\/h2>\n<p>In the \u2018Experimental Design and Statistical Framework\u2019 section of the \u2018Research involving the use of animals\u2019 template, include details of the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>scientific rationale for the experimental design<\/li>\n<li>choice of animal model<\/li>\n<li>experimental plans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You must make a clear case for how the chosen design will enable the stated objectives of your research to be achieved.<\/p>\n<p>NC3Rs has an <a href=\"https:\/\/eda.nc3rs.org.uk\/\">Experimental Design Assistant tool<\/a> that can help you describe your experimental plans and analyses.<\/p>\n<h2>Genetically altered animals<\/h2>\n<p>If your research involves genetically modified organisms, work must not start until approval has been received from the appropriate Local Ethical Committee or other appropriate authority.<\/p>\n<p>Where experiments involve genetically altered animals, you should refer to the UKRI policy on research and innovation involving animals.<\/p>\n<p>For research involving genetically altered mice, you should also refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1258\/002367706776318971\">report on \u2018Assessing the welfare of genetically altered mice\u2019 on Sage Journals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Ask a question about animals in research<\/h2>\n<p>Email:\u202f<a href=\"mailto:eligibility@bbsrc.ac.uk\">eligibility@bbsrc.ac.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We will aim to respond within 15 working days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"parent":26809,"template":"page.php","categories":[49],"tags":[],"wf_council_folders":[287,129],"class_list":["post-26828","council","type-council","status-publish","hentry","category-bbsrc"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/council\/26828","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/council"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/council"}],"version-history":[{"count":24,"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/council\/26828\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":170703,"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/council\/26828\/revisions\/170703"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/council\/26809"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=26828"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=26828"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=26828"},{"taxonomy":"wf_council_folders","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/wf_council_folders?post=26828"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
