{"id":48256,"date":"2021-12-15T20:44:51","date_gmt":"2021-12-15T20:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beta-ukri.msappproxy.net\/?page_id=48256"},"modified":"2025-05-12T12:29:19","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T11:29:19","slug":"research-excellence-framework","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/who-we-are\/research-england\/research-excellence\/research-excellence-framework\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Excellence Framework"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK&#8217;s system for assessing the excellence of research in UK higher education providers (HEPs).<\/p>\n<p>The REF outcomes are used to inform the allocation of around \u00a32 billion per year of public funding for universities&#8217; research.<\/p>\n<p>The REF was first carried out in 2014, replacing the previous Research Assessment Exercise. Research England manages the REF on behalf of all the four UK higher education funding bodies:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Research England<\/li>\n<li>Scottish Funding Council<\/li>\n<li>Commission for Tertiary Education and Research (Medr)<\/li>\n<li>Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The funding bodies&#8217; shared policy aim for research assessment is to secure the continuation of a world-class, dynamic and responsive research base across the full academic spectrum within UK higher education.<\/p>\n<h3>REF objectives<\/h3>\n<p>The REF objectives are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>provide accountability for public investment in research and produce evidence of the benefits of this investment<\/li>\n<li>provide benchmarking information and establish reputational yardsticks, for use in the higher education sector and for public information<\/li>\n<li>inform the selective allocation of funding for research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ref.ac.uk\/\">Find out more on the REF website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/future-research-assessment-programme\/ref-2029-update\">REF progress update: November 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ref.ac.uk\/news\/update-on-initial-decisions\/\">REF progress update: December 2023<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK&#8217;s system for assessing the excellence of research in UK higher education providers (HEPs).
